12 Japanese erotic paintings on silk, Meiji
This Japanese album of 12 paintings on silk shows a subject which is a perennial favourite in Japanese erotic art, the nocturnal visit of a blind masseur to a lady. The blind were often a subject for humour in traditional Japanese art in a way that today would be considered heartless and in bad taste. Maybe the implication in erotic art is that the masseur could not identify the lady and her secret was safe! The colours are very attractive and heightened with gold here and there. The paintings are mounted as they would have been direct from the painter, that is tacked onto a stout paper backing and untrimmed. The purchaser had the option of having them properly mounted at a later date. Each painting is in excellent condition having been protected by the backing which is a bit ragged on the edges. It dates from the late 19th. century, the Meiji era. Each picture is 10 x 7.5 inches. (25.5 x 19.5 cms).
